UR Pride is actively challenging the Saskatchewan government’s student pronoun legislation, with 28 interveners including civil liberties organizations, educators, children’s rights advocates, legal associations, medical organizations, and several provincial and federal governments which are seeking to provide their perspectives to the Supreme Court of Canada. The case centers on the privacy and Charter rights of 2SLGBTQ+ students, as Saskatchewan’s Parents’ Bill of Rights requires parental consent for students under 16 to use a different gender-related name or identity at school and invokes the notwithstanding clause.
