Purpose of the Fund

The UR Pride Centre has created an GSD Student Emergency Fund to support gender and sexually diverse students in navigating extreme homophobia or transphobia to subsidize living costs.

In the past six months, UR Pride Centre has seen an increase in International and Domestic Students requesting financial support due mostly to family conflict. Many international students who are 2SLGBTQIAP+ often begin studying in Canada, and choose to come out of the closet. The decision to come out often leads to being financially and socially cut off by their family members who express homophobic or transphobic sentiments.

Fund Eligibility

To apply for this fund, an applicant must:

  • Enrolled, as an International or Domestic Student, in any area of study at the University of Regina or an affiliated college;
  • Self-declared 2SLGBTQIAP+;
  • Demonstrates an inability to support one’s self due to effects of homophobia, or transphobia; and
  • Demonstrates financial need.

Priority will be for International Students or other students who find themselves unable to secure employment or access additional means of funding.

The Fund may not be used to pay for tuition costs. The Fund is not an academic scholarship or bursary.

For the purpose of the Fund, UR Pride understands “living costs” as, but not limited, to:

  • Costs associated with shelter, such as rent, room and board or utilities;
  • Costs associated with ground transportation, such as transit passes or gas;
  • Costs associated with personal hygiene and care, such as toiletries, or clothing;
  • Groceries; and
  • Other costs deemed appropriate by the UR Pride Finance Committee or alternate.
How to Apply

To apply for the fund, a student needs to provide us with a letter that includes:

  • Their name;
  • Information about how they identify with regards to the 2SLGBTQIAP+ community;
  • Information about the purpose for their request;
  • Information about their financial need;
  • A budget outlining their average monthly living costs; and
  • The amount of funds that they are applying for and for what length of time (up to a maximum of $300/month for three months).
