In Fall 2018, UR Pride introduced an initiative called the Colourful Campus House program for queer, trans, intersex and allied students. This program allows 2SLGBTQIA+ students to apply for student housing that falls under a GSD Living-Learning Community with Housing Services at the University of Regina.
The University of Regina has allocated two six-bedroom apartment-style residences in the newly renovated College West building to UR Pride Centre’s Colourful Campus House initiative. In partnership with the University, we’re confident these residences will feel like home for 2SLGBTQIAP+, and allied students at the University of Regina.
In addition to offering students the opportunity to apply for one of the 12 vacancies, the University of Regina is also encouraging 2SLGBTQIAP+ and allied students to apply for a housing award to help subsidize the cost of living on campus.
How to Apply
Every fall, starting July 1st, UR Pride will accept applications for the Colourful Campus House. To apply, please fill out the application HERE!
There is an option on the application form to also apply for a bursary to subsidize the cost of living on campus.
Please apply anytime, and reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org for information on moving in.
Frequently Asked Questions
More questions? Email us at email@example.com!
Can I apply for the Colourful Campus House if I've already applied for Student Housing at the University of Regina?
Yes! If you’re selected for the Colourful Campus House, we’ll alert Housing Services and they’ll handle the rest.
Do I have to identify as 2SLGBTQIAP+ to apply for the Colourful Campus House?
Nope. We don’t require that anybody identifies as any specific identity in order to apply. As long as you want to live in a space that actively works to be free from homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and intersexphobia, we invite you to apply!
We try our best to prioritize 2SLGBTQIAP+ students, but we also know that not all 2SLGBTQIAP+ people are comfortable identifying that way openly.
Will my information be shared with the University of Regina?
By applying to the program, your information will not be shared. But if you’re accepted into the program, we’ll have to get them the information they need. That being said, all of this will be clearly articulated to you before we do it.
Do I have to be a University of Regina student to apply?
Yes, this is a program for University of Regina students, including those enrolled in an affiliated college (Luther College, Campion College & First Nations University of Canada).
Why do you have special housing for 2SLGBTQIAP+ students? Isn't that segregation?
The Colourful Campus House isn’t specifically for 2SLGBTQIAP+ students; it’s for everybody who’s interested in living in a space where all people are respected, no matter their sexual or romantic orientation, gender or intersex status. That being said, it’s definitely a space that prioritizes gender and sexually diverse (GSD) students.
We’ve chosen to do this because research shows that 2SLGBTQIAP+ students on university campuses are less likely to feel safe in traditional student housing for a variety of reasons. We’re working to reduce these barriers to safe living on campus.
Some 2LGBTQI+ students will feel safe in traditional housing, and others won’t. This is just one option.
What are the costs of living?
The rates are identical to those listed on this website: https://www.uregina.ca/housing/housing-options/college-west/index.html
Per semester, the rate is $3,482, which works out to about $870/month. The Colourful Campus House is from Fall (September) – Winter (April). Since you’d be living there for two semesters, it would end up being $6,964. Everything is included in this, including utilities. When you apply for the Colourful Campus House, you can also request a bursary that is equal to $1,000; so it would really end up being $5,964.
The way that Residence Services requires payment is usually up front at each semester, but you can arrange payment plans. You can learn more about payment here: https://www.uregina.ca/housing/living-on-campus/payments-fees.html.
