In response to concerns from Regina Public School parents, including Justine Taylor that providing children with the opportunity to participate in Pride events is inappropriate and causes some children with certain “religious and moral beliefs” to not feel included, Regina Public Schools Board of Education Trustee Aleana Young put forward a motion that would allow all Regina Public Schools to celebrate Pride week and Pride events at school.

This motion is being voted on during the October 15th 2019 meeting of the Regina Public Schools Board of Education Trustees, and we are supporting Trustee Young in her request that as many people as possible email the Board before the meeting. The list of trustees and their email links are available online here or can be found below.

Please take a look at some sample letters that we’ve included below that you can use in your own letters of support to your local trustee. Besides writing letters of support, we are asking for as many pro-LGBTQ+ folks to attend the meeting located at the Division Office (1600 4th Avenue) on Tuesday, October 15th at 5:30 p.m. wearing Pride or rainbow shirts.

Dear Regina Board of Education Trustee,

I am writing as a parent of a child who attends a Regina Public School to express my support for the motion regarding student participation in Pride events and Pride week.

I have significant concern that a denial of this motion will cause harm to my child and their peers. Pride week and Pride events are a direct opportunity for Regina Public School students to show support and solidarity to 2SLGBTQ+ (Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, etc.) and allied people in their schools and in their community. I believe that it is important for my child to have the opportunity to participate in the promotion of inclusion and diversity as part of their education.

It is the responsibility of Regina Public Schools to support every aspect of my child’s learning, and this is no exception. Being able to participate in Pride events provides my child with the opportunity to learn about inclusion, diversity, and the experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ people.

Furthermore, opportunities for my child and their teachers to learn about 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion will lead to a safer and more inclusive school and learning environment for them. A 2011 study be Egale Canada found that over 60% of 2SLGBTQ+ students felt unsafe in their Canadian schools. I expect Regina Public Schools to prioritize my child’s safety and inclusion, and in order to do that, you must vote in support of this motion.

Please take this letter as my statement of support for this motion, and I urge you to support this motion for the wellbeing of all children, including my own, at Regina Public Schools. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Signed,

Dear Regina Board of Education Trustee,

I am writing as a student of Regina Public Schools to express my support for the motion regarding student participation in Pride events and Pride week.

As a young person attending a Regina Public School, I recognize the value that participation in Pride week and Pride events provide to me and my friends. Included in our value statements is the phrase: I belong. Being able to take part in Pride events with my school allows me to show my 2SLGBTQ+ friends and peers that they belong at Regina Public Schools, and that they belong in our community.

[Include any personal comments here].

2SLGBTQ+ kids at our schools deserve to feel safe and included, just like I do. Not being able to show my support for 2SLGBTQ+ kids during Pride week with my school would cause many students to feel alienated, isolated and alone. As a board trustee, it’s your responsibility to help ensure the safety and inclusion of all students, including 2SLGBTQ+ students.

Please take this letter as my statement of support for this motion, and I urge you to support this motion for the wellbeing of all kids at Regina Public Schools, including me.
